Internal Functioning of the Miniature

The SLS (Space Launch System) miniature is a showcase of internal engineering: one of those sets where you understand, as you build, exactly how a real rocket works on the inside.

Each section was designed to reproduce the structural and operational logic of the SLS, the most powerful rocket ever developed by NASA since the Saturn V.

The assembly happens in modules, and each module reveals a different aspect of the technology behind the Artemis missions.

First, you build the Solid Rocket Boosters (SRBs), which in the model are long, tubular, and extremely well-reinforced pieces. Inside the rocket, there are structural shafts and high-rigidity connectors to imitate the behavior of the large real boosters, which provide most of the thrust in the first minutes of launch.

The way they connect to the core stage with reinforced pins and side supports imitates the attachment engineering used in real rockets: strong enough to support the entire structure, but flexible enough for the build to be fun and stable.

Next, you move into the Core Stage, and this is where the assembly shines.

The orange core, characteristic of the SLS, is built with a combination of System and Technic techniques: textured outer walls that simulate thermal insulation and an interior reinforced with cross-beams.

The internal engineering creates a “skeleton” that supports all the weight of the upper section.

At the top, you assemble the Interim Cryogenic Propulsion Stage (ICPS), which in the set is connected through a modular fastening system, representing the stage that performs the final burn to send Orion to the Moon.
